Stockholm Waterfront was designed to bring people and ideas together. From conferences and major congresses to concerts and gala events, we welcome the world all year round. Events on this scale demand substantial resources. Using them wisely is a responsibility we take seriously.
Since opening in 2011, Stockholm Waterfront has been recognised as one of Europe’s most energy-efficient buildings. Now we’re taking the next step, bringing every part of our operations in line with the Verified Net Zero standard.
WHAT DOES VERIFIED NET ZERO MEAN?
Verified Net Zero is Radisson Hotel Group’s own initiative to measure and reduce emissions, with the goal of achieving net zero. The programme focuses on energy, food and waste. It takes a comprehensive look at emissions across the operation, including those from day-to-day activities and purchased energy, as well as food, transport and waste.
The programme is based on the Net Zero Methodology for Hotels, developed by the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance. Emissions are calculated and reported in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the work is independently verified by TÜV Rheinland.
100% RENEWABLE ENERGY
Our energy-efficient congress centre runs entirely on renewable energy, including solar and hydropower. The building meets the requirements for environmental certification.
LOW-CARBON FOOD
Our menus feature responsibly sourced ingredients, carefully chosen to reduce climate impact without compromising on flavour.
LESS WASTE
We separate waste to maximise recycling and minimise what goes to waste. Digital services help us reduce the need for paper and single-use items.
SUSTAINABILITY BUILT IN
Stockholm Waterfront was designed to make the most of nature’s resources. Solar panels integrated into the glass façades capture the sun’s energy, while water from Lake Mälaren helps cool the building. These solutions maintain a comfortable indoor temperature while using less energy.
The expansive glass façades incorporate 1,040 square metres of solar panels, which convert solar energy into electricity and heat.
Making use of the waterfront location, the building is cooled with water drawn from Klara sjö. In the basement, tanks hold 250 tonnes of ice, providing thermal storage that helps regulate the building’s temperature.
Energy efficiency is built into Stockholm Waterfront, but managing consumption and emissions requires ongoing monitoring. We therefore closely monitor electricity use, heating and cooling to keep our systems running efficiently.
FROM MORNING COFFEE TO GALA DINNERS
Food is an essential part of the Stockholm Waterfront experience. It also contributes to our carbon footprint. That’s why we review our ingredients, recipes and menus to reduce emissions from the food we serve—without compromising on what makes a meal worth coming together for.
Making the most of leftover food is another key part of our approach. By tracking how much is actually consumed, we can adjust our purchasing and reduce food waste.
PARTNERSHIPS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Our sustainability work begins long before anything arrives at Stockholm Waterfront. It extends from food and drink to laundry services, single-use items and transport. That’s why we work with suppliers who share our commitment to using resources wisely and reducing climate impact.
We also continually review how we use resources on site: where we can avoid unnecessary consumption, how we can make better use of what we have, and how we manage the waste that remains.
CARBON-NEUTRAL MEETINGS
We automatically offset the carbon footprint of all meetings and events at Stockholm Waterfront, at no additional cost to our clients. Emissions are calculated using the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI).
Through Radisson Hotel Group’s partnership with First Climate, these offsets support projects that reduce emissions. This initiative operates separately from the Verified Net Zero programme.
CERTIFICATIONS AND ECOLABELS
Our environmental credentials go beyond Verified Net Zero. Stockholm Waterfront also holds LEED Gold certification, which assesses the environmental performance of buildings. We have also been awarded the Green Key ecolabel, with requirements covering energy, water, waste and social responsibility.
These certifications and ecolabels set clear standards for us to meet—and give us a reason to keep improving, long after the last guest has left and the lights have gone out.
